NEW YORK, NY (January 28, 2010) – New York Democratic Congressional candidate Vincent Morgan believes “Everyone who serves in the U.S. military deserves the right to do so without fear of reprisal or dismissal because of their sexual orientation.” He supports immediate abolishment of the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” law that has been in effect since 1993 and passage of the H.R. bill 1283 that revokes it.
“Gay men and women have been fighting and dying for America since our country was founded. That may not be documented in the records, but surely, it is true. ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’ violates the civil rights of millions of Americans.”
Morgan urges President Obama to stand firm on the call he made during his State of the Union address to overturn the law. Morgan also calls on the Pentagon to not drag their feet. “The law has already penalized thousands of gays and lesbians, causing them to be dismissed from military service since the law went into effect. It shouldn’t take a year to get this done.”
Morgan went on to say, “Gays and lesbians are just as much a part of the American body politic as anyone else. Their patriotism should not be questioned. There should be no shame on their part and no blame by their fellow citizens.”
