Vincent Morgan Calls for the Public Option to be Included in the Final Healthcare Bill

NEW YORK, NY (January 11, 2010) – New York Democratic Congressional candidate Vincent Morgan is calling upon Congress to include the public option in its final version of the Health Care bill that will be sent to the President. In a statement issued today, Morgan stated that the current version of the bill may prove to be a financial burden to New York’s 15th Congressional District, which has an average income under $27,000 per year per household.

“This legislation, as written, mandates that Americans pay up to eight percent of their income to private insurance companies and allows insurance companies to charge the elderly up to 300 percent more for health insurance. In its current form, this bill would end up being a financial burden to many of the residents of the 15th district,” says Morgan.

“There are some good things in this bill: Monies that go to prevention and wellness; increased funding for community health centers; creation of an insurance exchange that gives consumers the ability to choose a plan that best suits their needs. These things represent positive change for our nation’s health care system. However, the reality remains that Americans need more. We need less health insurance and more health care in the form of wellness promotion and preventive care.”

“Without the public option to create competition and keep costs down, the cost of medical care will continue to rise. Under this bill, insurance premiums will rise an average of $1,000 per year for a family of four.”

“The President has stated his support for the public option. Now is the time for the Democratic controlled Congress to step up and get this bill right. All the Senate needs at this point is a simple majority to pass it. There are fifty Senators ready to jump on board.”
