Vincent Morgan Announces Run for New York’s 15th Congressional District
Campaign to bring integrity, unity and a new vision to Upper Manhattan
NEW YORK, NY (October 13, 2009) – Harlem based community banker Vince Morgan today officially announced his candidacy for the 15th Congressional District of New York. The primary election is slated for September 14, 2010. The District, which has for 40 years been represented by Congressman Charles B. Rangel, encompasses the communities of East Harlem, Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood and the Upper Westside.
“It’s time for new leadership that brings people together,” says Morgan. “Our District needs a Representative that is in touch with the needs of community and with the issues that confront us today.”
Morgan has racked up an impressive list of achievements during his decade long residency in Harlem. His professional career spans almost two decades in business, banking and government. Currently, he serves as vice president and community banking officer for TD Bank. On the personal side, he devotes countless hours in service to the community. In 2001, he volunteered for service in the Harlem office of Congressman Charles B. Rangel. His hard work quickly led to a staff position as special assistant to the Congressman. In 2002, he was appointed campaign director for the Congressman’s successful re-election. In 2007, his belief in community self-determination inspired him to lead the creation of Harlem NOW, a non-partisan group dedicated to mobilizing people to work together in solving grassroots issues. He is chairman of the 125th Street Business Improvement District and a director of the Greater Harlem Chamber of Commerce and The Riverside Theater. He serves on the advisory boards of the Harlem Biennale, Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Allianza Dominicana. He is also a mentor for the Future Giants in Harlem and the Youth Empowerment Initiative.
Morgan stands on a platform of “Unity” believing that “By working together, residents of the District can accomplish great things; solve problems that affect us all and expand opportunities for everyone.”
Among the issues that affect the 15th Congressional District in vast disproportion are: Jobs; healthcare for all; affordable housing; small business growth; NGO development; quality education; senior services and building a better future for our children.
Raised by a single mother in Chicago’s tough Bronzeville community, Vince almost became a statistic when he dropped out of high school at age 16. With the support of concerned adults and his own determination, he succeeded in turning his life around. He obtained his GED; went on to attend Howard University in Washington, D.C.; graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Illinois at Chicago and earned a Master’s degree in public administration from Columbia University.
“The 15th District deserves good leadership and I am staking all of my resources on making that possible,” says Morgan. “Let’s stand up, unite and empower me to go to Washington to speak truth to power and bring the benefits back home.”
